PRESS STATEMENT 10 JULY 2013
RAMADAN MUBARAK! SELAMAT BERPUASA!
MELBOURNE - MASCA Victoria (Malaysian Students’ Council of Australia - Victoria) would like to wish all Muslims a happy and blessed Ramadan! Ramadan Mubarak!
What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is a belief that in the month of Ramadan, the Quran (holy book of Muslims) was sent down from heaven as guidance for men and also as a direction and a means to salvation.
Muslims fast in the month of Ramadan and abstain from eating, drinking, and any other forms of pleasures from dawn to dusk for the entire month. A typical day for Muslims during this month starts with the eating of the sahoor (the meal eaten by Muslims who fast before the sun rises). Once sahoor is done then Muslims who fast cannot eat or drink the whole day. Once the sun sets, they then break their fast by having a meal called iftar. Fasting helps Muslims learn the art of self-control and patience. It includes a mind exercise to curb the urge of satiating bodily desires. Ramadan is an opportunity for all Muslims to benefit in this holy month of forgiveness and forbearance.
