                        Malaysian Games

Dubbed the biggest Malaysian sporting event in Victoria, our Malaysian Games, is the largest Malaysian sports event in Victoria.

While the main aim of the event is to select our best athletes to represent Victoria in MASCA’s annual National Conference and Games (NCG), it also cultivates healthy lifestyle as well as fostering closer bonds amongst the Malaysian students through competition in sports.

Malaysian Games includes sports events such as badminton, netball, volleyball, futsal, tennis, table tennis, basketball etc.

                        Inter-Varsity Games (Malaysian Games)
This year’s Inter-Varsity Games (IVG) was yet another success for MASCA Victoria with its overwhelming responses and smooth execution. IVG 2011, an event to select the best of Victoria’s sportsmen and sportswomen for the National Conference and Games (NCG) did just that and so much more as the true spirit of sportsmanship shone through the players.

A whole range of events were organised, that includes basketball, netball, futsal, badminton, volleyball, tennis, table tennis, squash and Frisbee. It was encouraging to note the enthusiasm among the Malaysian sporting community as students eagerly signed up, some for multiple events even if it meant playing on a tight schedule and for the entire day; also many of the students were in it for the fun and not just vying for top spots. Badminton topped the list as the favourite sport with more than 90 registering for the singles, while basketball and volleyball were equally popular among the team events.

The main events were held over two days during the Easter break (26th and 27th April) at the Melbourne University Sports Centre while Frisbee was played at Princess Park. Futsal was played at Albert Park on the 7th and 8th of May. There were high spirited crowd gathering at the games venue to support their fellow friends. The sports centre was abuzz with activity as people lingered around the grounds, and the barbeque pit was kept busy serving warm hotdogs.

The much anticipated event saw plenty of drama as participants sweated it out and put forward their very best on the courts. Competition was very keen as the nation’s best players squared it out under the eyes of the professional referees, who themselves were impressed by the amount of talent on display. Something especially noteworthy was that teams, despite having lost in the earlier matches, they stayed on to cheer their opponents in the finals. There was not a quiet moment as spectators roared in commendation when the winning teams came up to collect their medals and certificates. All participants also received certificates of participation to honour their efforts.

Each day started early and the end of the day saw weary but satisfied participants as they got to play the sport they loved. For some, the experience was made sweeter with well-deserved victory and the opportunity to represent Victoria in the upcoming NCG.
